Reporting to and receiving direction from senior research scientist Drs Harold Mao and Samuel Mao, the Research Scientist/Grant Writer performs a variety of duties related to writing and coordinating grant funding proposals and Preparation of Application documents related to the CO2 Capture, Utilization & Sequestration (CCUS) Study.

Proposal Development: Grant writers are responsible for developing persuasive and compelling proposals. This includes writing a clear and concise narrative that effectively communicates the organization’s goals, objectives, and the specific project or program for which funding is being sought. They outline the need for funding, demonstrate the potential impact, and provide a detailed plan for implementation.

Research potential funding sources that align with the organization’s mission and programs. This involves identifying grant opportunities, understanding the eligibility criteria, and reviewing the requirements and guidelines set by the funding entities.

Budgeting: Grant writers work closely with program managers and finance personnel to develop a comprehensive budget for the proposed project or program. They ensure that the budget aligns with the funder’s guidelines and accurately reflects the expenses associated with the project, including personnel costs, equipment, supplies, and other relevant expenses.

Application Submission: Grant writers manage the application submission process, ensuring that all required documents, forms, and supporting materials are included and submitted by the designated deadlines. They may also handle any necessary follow-up communication with the funding entity.

Develops, assembles and submits grant funding proposals and related documents (e.g., application forms, letters, budgets, reference lists, appendices, curriculum vitae) to major funding bodies, including the National Research Council Canada (NRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Mitacs etc..

Clearly and persuasively communicates scientific research and CCUS concepts in writing

Organizes and leads meetings with investigators on grant and/or research manuscript submissions to various funding competitions and scientific journals

Prioritizes and manages several projects with various authors and reviewers at one time, while ensuring timely and accurate submission of all materials

Conducts and summarizes literature reviews for a variety of topics including, but not limited to, CCUS, CO2 capture, Climate Change, MBR.

Presents layout, formatting and design recommendations according to grant agency requirements

Performs other duties as required


A graduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, biotechnology and a minimum of 3 years of recent related professional experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on work experience may be considered.

Additional relevant training or certification an asset (e.g., formal training in grant writing, technical communication certification, membership in a professional writing society)

Knowledge and experience in writing and submitting high-level grants and proposals to the above funding agencies are preferred;

Ability to interpret and communicate CCUS research data and statistical language

High level of computer literacy, including proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, online databases and search engines, and reference management software (e.g., EndNote)

Experience conducting and summarizing academic literature reviews using a variety of databases (e.g., PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, etc.)

Self-directed with excellent writing, analytical, and research skills

Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy

Ability to prioritize, multi-task and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment, and effectively manage urgent and long-term deadlines

Excellent ability to work and learn independently with minimal supervision required, as well as collaborate well as part of a larger team

Project management experience and/or training is a good asset

Excellent stakeholder relation skills, with a sense of diplomacy

Excellent organizational skills and record keeping
